Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a tactical role-playing game that returns to the series' roots, offering a new story with a new cast of characters while maintaining the signature blend of turn-based strategy and real-time action. It's set during the same timeframe as the original Valkyria Chronicles, but instead of following the Gallian Militia, you play as a squad in the larger Atlantic Federation.
Story and Setting
The game follows the story of Commander Claude Wallace and his childhood friends, who are part of Squad E of the Federation Army. They embark on a desperate mission, known as "Operation Northern Cross," to fight the invading Imperial Alliance. Their goal is to capture the Imperial capital and end the war once and for all. Along the way, they will face the brutal realities of war, bone-chilling blizzards, and a powerful enemy known as the Valkyria. The narrative is presented in a unique "Memoirs from Battle" style, as if it were a historical account being read after the war.
Gameplay
The core gameplay is a refinement of the "BLiTZ" battle system from the first game, which combines strategic overhead map command with third-person, real-time control of individual units.

Turn-Based Strategy: On the command map, you use "Command Points" to select your units and move them on the battlefield. The number of points you have depends on your leaders and can be saved for later turns.

Real-Time Action: Once you select a unit, you take direct control of them in a third-person view. You have a limited "Action Point" gauge to move and position your unit before you take an action, such as shooting an enemy or using an item.
